Modern Kids Design Earth Day Post

Celebrating Earth Day All Year Long

We’re sorry to have to say goodbye to Earth Month. So today at Modern Kids Design we wanted to share a few ideas we brainstormed to keep Earth Month Top of mind for the rest of the year.

There are a lot of little changes we can make as parents to keep our families Earth-friendly every day. Investing time to learn about the products we bring into our homes can help our children’s health and the well-being of the planet. Creating an environmentally-friendly culture begins at home and can be cultivated through family activities.

The mantra “Reduce Reuse Recycle” is a great way to introduce one of the easiest ways make an environmental impact. Kids are great at recycling used papers and milk cartons. As founts of creativity, kids are capable of reusing everything from egg cartons to party decorations. Art projects are a great way to re-purpose items. Reducing waste is a little more difficult, but being aware of the items we purchase and the amount of packaging they use (and whether it’s recyclable or reusable) can go a long way to cutting back on the waste we send to landfills.

Gardening and composting have grown in popularity and it’s easy to see why. The magic of growing our own vegetables and flowers is inspiring, as is watching worms turn our leaves and food scraps into nutrient-rich soil. Kids can take an active part in ensuring that organic matter makes its way to the compost bin and can learn about what plants need as they tend to their own patch of earth.

Turning off the lights as we leave a room and shutting off the faucet when not in use aren’t just great conservation tips, they’re an easy way to get kids thinking about and involved with protecting our resources. As parents, we can also investigate using wind or solar power at home and invest in energy-efficient appliances.

With kids come “messy” spaces, but don’t let clean up make an even bigger mess. There are plenty of natural solutions for cleaning up around the house. Investing in non-toxic cleaners is healthier for our families and the Earth. The same goes for our bodies. Natural, non-toxic soaps, shampoos, and lotions are a wonderful way to make sure we’re treating our bodies well, while also helping the planet.

There are plenty of ways to make an impact on environmental health. It’s important that we set an example in our families and talk about the effect that we have on the planet. To support families in doing this there are many  resources around the web that have been made available during Earth Month for people to access all year long. Our kids learn by watching us. Lets show them how we turn Earth Day into every day. Thanks for reading and, as always, please feel fee to drop us a line if there is anything in particular you’d like to read about going forward.  And, in case you’re wondering, the picture is one we took while visiting Earth Hall at the Natural History Museum in London.
