DIY with Essential Oils

At Modern Kids Design, we’ve been amazed by how many natural remedies use essential oils. Whether you want to relax, feel energized, clean, manage pests, or fight acne—there’s an essential oil for that. We love to use essential oils around the house and when it’s time to relax. Learning about the different properties of the plants and oils can reinforce our bond with the planet.

Essential oils are distilled from plants and are highly concentrated. Some can be consumed, some applied topically, and some you only need to sniff to feel energized or focused. Make sure to take time to read the information provided with your essential oils and follow any directions for distilling them.

Here are a few of our favorite natural remedies:

To Rest
In our hyper-connected world, it can be difficult to relax and get some much-needed sleep. Diffusing an essential oil is not only a wonderful way to naturally scent your home, but it can also help soothe your spirit and mind. Clary sage, ylang ylang, and lavender are well known for their relaxing properties. For a soothing bath, consider adding a few drops of lavender into your warm water. The scent will help you calm down after a long day.
For Acne
Spotting a couple of blemishes? Simply soak a cotton ball in water and add a drop or two of tea tree oil. Tea tree oil can be found in many face and body washes, as well as shampoos. It is a cleansing oil with a unique scent. Tea tree oil can also be used in homemade cleansers as well as insect repellants.

For Nausea
Feeling queasy? Ginger tea is a common remedy and can be made with squeezing natural ginger. If you don’t think you can hold anything down, though, consider sniffing a bit of peppermint oil or lemon oil.

For Energy or Alertness
If you need a quick pick me up, consider sniffing some peppermint oil instead of grabbing another cup of coffee. Peppermint oil, as well as citrus-based oils like lemon oil, wake up the senses—and all you need is a quick sniff!

To Freshen a Room
Rather than using an aerosol spray or other chemical room freshener, diffuse some essential oils. Whether you like the smell of cinnamon in winter, sandalwood in fall, or geranium in spring, there’s an essential oil that will suit your mood and make your home feel welcoming.

It’s important to make sure that you are purchasing high-quality essential oils, especially if you are using it on your skin or plan on ingesting them. And remember, each essential oil is different. Make sure to learn about your oils and the different uses so you can use them safely and happily.
